Ravello: Villa Rufolo or Villa Cimbrone – Which Visit Fits Your Day?

Updated October 23, 2026 · 4 min read

Stone terraces and green gardens above the blue Amalfi Coast

For most independent visitors, Ravello is best treated as a walking day: choose Villa Rufolo for the compact visit and Villa Cimbrone when the garden walk and sea terrace are the point. If you want Amalfi, Ravello and Positano linked without planning the road, the Amalfi Coast Vespa tour is the clearest bookable alternative: 6.5 hours, from €340 per person, rated 5 from 30 reviews. It is not the economical way to see one villa.

Two gardens, two different visits

Villa Rufolo sits close to Ravello’s main square, so it fits naturally into a shorter stop. Its courtyards, towers and terraces make the architecture part of the visit. Villa Cimbrone asks for more walking through the town and grounds; choose it when the garden itself and the belvedere are your reason for coming. Neither choice needs a vehicle once you are in central Ravello.

Do not force both into a rushed coastal itinerary. One unhurried garden, the cathedral square and time for the lanes usually make a better Ravello visit than checking two names while watching the clock. Check opening hours and admission on the official venue pages before setting out, because the tour description does not cover them.

What the guided day changes

The Vespa tour links the highlights of Amalfi, Ravello and Positano with a local guide and explains the villas’ origins. The value is the continuous guided journey and the coastal road, not an admission shortcut. At €340 per person it suits travellers who actively want the Vespa experience; it is poor value if your only aim is Villa Rufolo or Villa Cimbrone.

Who should choose what?

Choose Villa Rufolo for a compact first visit. Choose Villa Cimbrone for a slower garden-centred outing. Choose the guided Vespa day only if the ride and three-town narrative matter as much as Ravello. Anyone uncomfortable on a scooter, travelling with substantial luggage or wanting a quiet single-villa visit should skip it.

Our recommendation: visit one villa independently. For a special guided coast day rather than a simple Ravello visit, book the Amalfi, Ravello and Positano Vespa tour.
