Amalfi Coast Without a Car: Bus, Ferry or Parking?

Updated October 23, 2026 · 4 min read

A passenger ferry crossing blue water below steep coastal villages

For most visitors staying in Amalfi, the best no-car plan is ferry first when the sea route serves your stop, bus for inland places, and walking inside each town. A car adds parking and narrow-road stress rather than freedom. If you want the coast itself to become the day’s experience, the Amalfi Coast and Positano boat trip combines transport-like views with swimming, caves, fruit and drinks: 4–8 hours from €99 per person, rated 4.9 from 2,703 reviews.

Ferry: best for the coastal view

A ferry avoids road traffic and gives you the cleanest arrival into seafront towns. Its weakness is simple: it follows the coast, not the hillside. Ravello, Agerola and trailheads still require a bus, taxi or organised outing. Sailings can also change, so confirm the operator’s timetable for your date rather than building a connection around memory.

Bus: useful, but not a private timetable

Buses reach places boats cannot, including uphill villages. They are the practical link for Ravello and Agerola, but luggage, queues and busy roads make tight connections fragile. Plan one main destination, leave margin, and know your final return before you wander away from the stop.

Driving and parking

A rental car makes sense when the coast is one part of a wider Campania journey, especially with rural accommodation. It is less convincing for town-hopping between Amalfi and Positano. Compare the rental terms, excess, fuel policy and parking arrangements before booking; never assume your accommodation includes a space. Compare rental cars for the Salerno and Amalfi Coast area.

Turn travel into the activity

The small-group boat trip departs from several coastal towns and takes up to 12 people to coves and sea caves, with snorkelling stops. It does not replace a ferry if you merely need to arrive somewhere with luggage. It does make sense when your goal is seeing the cliffs from the water rather than collecting towns.

Our recommendation: stay car-free for a coast-only break, use ferries and buses for different jobs, and choose the boat trip only when the journey itself is the attraction.
