Amalfi Coast Boat Tour from Amalfi or Positano: Which One Is Worth Booking?

For most people the best boat trip on the Amalfi Coast is the small-group snorkelling trip with drinks on board: from €99 per person, rated 4.9 from 2,703 reviews, with departures from Amalfi, Positano, Sorrento or Salerno. It is the most-reviewed boat trip here by a wide margin. Choose something else only if you want a short cheap cruise, a full day with time ashore, or a trip that leaves from one specific town.

The first decision is not the boat but the duration and the departure point. Every listing below is called “Amalfi Coast”, yet they differ in length from two hours to a full day, and in whether you leave from Amalfi, Positano or somewhere else. Read the option you select, not just the title.

The €99 small-group trip: why it leads

The listing offers half-day options from Amalfi or Positano and full-day options from Sorrento or Salerno. Groups are capped at 10 or 12 depending on the option, the boat is a 10 to 12 metre gozzo with a shaded canopy, toilet and freshwater shower, and the operator lists snorkelling equipment, fruit, prosecco, limoncello, beer and soft drinks. The full-day options add roughly 1.5 hours of free time in Positano and 1.5 in Amalfi; lunch there is not included. The half-day options stay on the water between the two towns.

The catch is the range: “4 to 8 hours” means you must pick the departure first, because the length and the stops depend on it. Some travellers on the listing page also noted that sticking more closely to the advertised timings would help, which is worth knowing if you have a train or a dinner booking afterwards.

The two €148 gozzo trips

These are the same operator’s boats and the same route highlights: the Grotta di Sant’Andrea, the Lovers’ Arch, the Furore Fjord, and beaches such as La Porta, with complimentary drinks and up to 10 guests. The difference is the starting point. One leaves from Amalfi or Salerno, the other exclusively from Positano. The 6-hour versions include a stop in Positano or Amalfi for free time. The booking page of the trip from Amalfi or Salerno also describes an 8-hour version from Salerno with 1.5 hours each in Amalfi and Positano; the “4 to 6 hours” in the table does not cover it.

Two practical points from the listing: on the Amalfi version, landing in Positano is by a small sea taxi that costs €5 per person, paid on the spot, so bring cash. And both list people with mobility impairments or wheelchair users as not suited, so confirm with the operator if that applies to your group. For the same money you could take the €99 trip, which has more than twice the reviews; pay the €49 extra for the gozzo if the smaller boat and the named caves matter to you. If you are weighing Positano as a base, our guide to a Positano boat trip and getting there without a car goes into the departure side.

When two hours is enough

The €36 trip from Amalfi runs along Amalfi, Atrani, Minori, Maiori, the Furore Fjord and Praiano, with an optional 30-minute swim stop at Atrani. It leaves at 11 am from the Cassone pier, according to the listing. It is the cheapest way onto the water and a fair first look, but it is a sightseeing cruise, not a snorkelling trip, and the operator lists motion sickness, wheelchair use and babies under one year as unsuitable. The Furore Fjord and Emerald Grotto guide explains what you actually see on this stretch.

The full day, and the Maiori option

The €139 full-day trip leaves from the Praiano or Positano piers, makes two swim stops and gives a 2 to 3 hour stop in Amalfi, with an aperitif on the way back. It is the one to pick if you want to eat and wander in Amalfi rather than stay on the boat. The Emerald Grotto visit is optional, costs about €10 on the spot and is not guaranteed. The listing says it is not wheelchair accessible.

The Maiori trip (€108, four hours) is the least proven, with 63 reviews. It starts at the other end of the coast, which suits you if you are staying in Maiori or Minori.
